Empire of Ashes is draped in the same tragic cloak as Aronofsky�s Requiem of a Dream and James Cagney�s Angels with Dirty Faces. It is entertained with the doomed characters that made Casablanca, Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge a joy to suffer with. The stories lair of self-fulfillment can only be achieved through failure, deceit, addiction, and endless love hailing past movie lovers such as Bogart and Bacal, Hepburn and Tracy, and Burton and Taylor. The gritty street feel and the avante garde portrayal of class plays out like Y tu Mama Tambien, Fellini�s La Dolce Vita, and American Beauty.
