V FOR VENDETTA as seen by SOLITAIRE
Spoilers Below!!!
On my way back from the bookstore I passed by the Pacific Theaters and followed my notion to buy a ticket for the movie with the longest line which happened to be "V for Vendetta".
"V for Vendetta" is the latest opus written and produced by the Wachowski brothers (Matrix Trilogy) and directed by James McTeigue.
The film opens in 17th century London with the riddle "Remember, Remember the 5th of November". Guy Fawkes Day it is!!
Was this movie, by any chance, about the reincarnated Guy Fawkes taking revenge today?
Almost!!!!
Time Travel to present day London - "V" the hero of the film, a character mix of "The Phantom of the Opera", "Zorro" and "RoboCop", living in the home of "Batman", surrounded by priceless, "forbidden Art", which "V" saves from being destroyed - versus - Adam Sutler aka "The Great Dictator". V is about to finish what Guy Fawkes started the "Big Blow Up of London!"
"Vs" political and personal rage is directed at the "Great Dictator" and his political entourage who caused his deformation and the death of tens of thousands of innocent people whom they tortured and exterminated through the release of chemical agents - they deserve death!!!
As a starter, "V" is announcing the execution of the House of Parliament by explosives on Guy Fawkes Day. To reach his goal "V" sacrifices himself, but is succeeded by his protg, a girl, he saves from the villains and who is carrying out his last wish, the blowing up of the House of Parliament, helped by Finch, the Irish, and very nave chief of police.
Finally, free from the bondage of tyranny, the crowd marches, masked as "V" and coming from all sides towards the House of Parliament. The policeman and "Vs" protge, watch the spectacle of the burning of London with awe and pleasure like once the Roman Emperor "Nero" enjoyed the burning of Rome.
My suggestion for the filmmakers of this movie is probably not so spectacular but a lot cheaper and practical: keep the House of Parliament, change it into an Art Museum as the home for "Vs" forbidden art collection and headed by the victims "Valerie" and "Deitrich" the talk show host, who were persecuted because of their undesired sexual preferences. But maybe in the sequel to this movie the writers and producers want to use Chairman Mao Tse Tungs cultural revolution theory to the max- not just for one building - than my suggestion would not be practical for them after all -
Somebody important once said V iolence causes V iolence - where do we begin and where do we stop??? At home, naturally!!
The film offers too many clichs and its message is "terribly" nave, the story relies to much on special effects keeping people happy with vengeance and terror.
Leaving the cinema, lyrics from an old Beatles song came to my mind "I am you and You are me and We are all together - Come together right now - Over me." As well as the ending of "Fahrenheit 451" a really great film, helmed by the late French Icon Francois Truffaut, where people portrayed living books as record keeper of forbidden literature. "V" for Vendetta" left me with the taste of a genetically engineered orange, beautiful looking, but tasteless. Absolutely no sabor!! Donate the proceeds to the Poor!!!
Please do not take me too serious I am not a professional critic, I just blubber out what comes into my mind.
Love and Peace,
SOLITAIRE
